Drum Major Competition The Drum Major’s competition at Highland Games examines all of the essential elements that combine to make a complete, professional Drum Major. The Drum Major’s competition is designed to evaluate discipline, deportment and the “show business” aspect of the job. Competitors are judged in inspection, command executions, marching deportment, and mace flourishing. Inspection ensures that he or she wears uniform correctly and is prime example for others to follow. Judges look for clear and concise execution of commands, either by voice, hand signal or mace signal. Deportment means maintaining a military bearing. Flourishing is the “show business” of the Drum Major. Judged on the variety, degree of difficulty, fluidity and musical appropriateness of the flourishes used.
